About Susan Compton Educated at the King's High School, Warwick, Susan began her study of the piano at the age of 6, originally studying with Joy Talbot and later continuing her study for four years at the Birmingham School of Music (now known as the Birmingham Conservatoire) with distinguished Hungarian born pianist, Joseph Weingarten, who himself trained at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, his teachers including Dohnanyi and Bartok. After gaining the ABSM keyboard teaching dipoma at the age of 18, and the ABSM piano recital diploma at the age of 19, Susan then continued her piano study for a further year in London with Sidney Harrison before taking a post graduate course in music education at the University of Central England, Birmingham.
In addition to regularly accompanying other young musicians for ABRSM exams, teaching and performance diplomas and concert work/recitals, Susan won six first prizes at the Birmingham Music Festival, including the open prize winners class at the age of 15. Performing as piano soloist in various locations around the UK, Susan also took part in a master class with Edith Vogel and later won a piano concerto competition, leading to a series of concerts in the UK and France, including live performances on English and French Radio. In her final year at the Conservatoire, Susan also won a special prize for her successful achievements throughout the year. Being interested in many kinds of music, Susan has also performed with a chamber group, a dinner dance band, and as soloist at various venues in the region. Although having a particular interest in the musical development of her private piano students, Susan has also worked as a piano and keyboard teacher with the Warwickshire County Music Service at various local schools, including training singing students at the Pattison College of Theatre Arts, where she created and performed the backing tracks for a performance in Coventry. On the advice of her teacher, Joseph Weingarten, Susan established her own private teaching practice at the age of 18 and has continued to teach students of all ages and ability for over 30 years. Students are accepted from the age of 6 years upwards. Adult students are always particularly welcome - you are never too old to enjoy the creation of music! Past students have included those who have continued to establish a musical career themselves, both as performers or teachers, although Susan also welcomes those who are interested in learning an instrument for the sheer enjoyment it can bring, with or without the need to take formal exams.
